Gestroi Isopods (Armadillidium Gestroi)

Gestroi Isopods (15 pcs)

Building a visually rich enclosure starts with species that do more than just blend in — and Gestroi Isopods are a perfect example. Armadillidium gestroi is a large pill isopod endemic to the Liguria region of northwestern Italy, where it occurs in coastal shrubland under stones and decaying plant matter in humid, Mediterranean conditions. It is especially known for its dark body marked with rows of vivid yellow spots, giving it a bold, ornamental look that stands out beautifully in naturalistic setups.

Like other members of Armadillidium, Gestroi are true “rollers,” able to curl into a tight ball when disturbed. Compared with more fast-moving runner types such as Porcellio laevis, they feel more classic in their pill-bug behavior while still offering strong visual interest and a more substantial presence thanks to their relatively large size, which can reach around 22 mm.

🔬 Ecosystem Support:
Gestroi Isopods contribute to the breakdown of organic matter and help support a healthier substrate, making them a beautiful and functional addition to bioactive terrariums.

🌱 Colorful, Larger, Classic.
Compared to many common hobby isopods, Gestroi are larger and more visually dramatic, with their yellow spotting giving them a more decorative look while still keeping the classic rolling behavior many keepers love.

Use for: Bioactive enclosures, terrariums, and display setups where strong visual appeal and true pill-bug behavior are part of the charm.

💡 TK’S TIP: Offer leaf litter, bark, and a moisture gradient rather than keeping the whole enclosure uniformly wet — this species appreciates humidity, but still benefits from airflow and drier pockets to choose from.
